Strengthening Our Diversity

Q&A With Kirk Bolton, President, Airdrie Black Community (ABC)

How long has the organization been in operation in Airdrie?

The ABC, pioneered by Sunday Adeleye, began in January 2022 when a few like-minded individuals spanning various cultures and Black history came together, believing that it was time for the Black community in Airdrie to start to harness its uniqueness and economic potential. Sunday was joined by Akin Akinwunmi, Komson Ferguson, Bright Adelegan and Leighton McLean, whom he considered friends and colleagues, and shared interests in pushing the narratives that existed amongst Black residents in Airdrie.

In February 2022, a steering committee was formed and Simiola Obasan, Yemis Akabos, Toby Okhere and Dixon Ulen joined the core members of Airdrie Black community. In the early days, fulfilling obligations such as delivering seminars, talking to parents of African heritage, visiting mission statement and core values of the vision, mission statement and core values of the association, were among things the steering committee performed.

After formally formed in July 2022, the steering committee took a new shape with Leighton McLean as an exceptional leader in his right. The board was inaugurated in October 2022. Dixon Ulen became president of ABC until August 2023, and June 2023. Simiola Obasan became the second president of ABC and in August 2025, I became the third president.

How can others get involved?

We would love to have everyone and anyone who identifies as Black in Airdrie to be active members of the ABC as part of our community in this city. It is our greatest resource and source of strength for the city and all, when they arrive in Airdrie. Whether new or old residents, we invite them to continue to reach out and register to become active members of the community. Membership involves registration with the secretariat, active participation, paying of annual dues, engaging in community watch, volunteering and interacting with other members of the association.

What is the main goal of ABC? How will it be achieved?

Our main goal is to create the platform for networking and partnership amongst Black residents in Airdrie — irrespective of age, gender, neighborhood, ethnicity or upbringing — by leveraging our shared values and talents so as to bring more overall merit to the community.

The vision is gradually being realized through efforts like community engagement, partnerships, ensuring representation where it matters (and youth mentorship), as well as other awareness and inclusion efforts.

The administration’s work is guided by our commitment under the acronym RISE: Reinforcing Inclusivity, Support and Empowerment for All. Inclusivity: Every member’s voice matters and representation is key. Support: We build networks and referrals for innovators and entrepreneurs. Empowerment: We provide tools, education and opportunities to thrive. RISE is more than a slogan — it is a philosophy that shapes how we lead, serve and engage.

Is there one accomplishment within the organization that you are most proud of?

Several little successes, just thinking of how far we’ve come and where we’re heading. Interactions among our businesses and members, partnerships with the City’s DEI committee, collaboration with the Airdrie CultureFest, participation in City events, and increased awareness in Airdrie — these are all indicators, and the recognition that we are gaining from all Airdrians.

What else would you like people to know about ABC?

ABC is a not-for-profit, non-religious and non-political organization. We are not affiliated with any political party or country. Our mission is to serve the Black community and people of African descent living in Airdrie by creating opportunities, support systems, socio-economic empowerment and representation. We are devoted to making positive contributions to the Airdrie as a whole, through any of our individual or collective capacities.

The ABC has a very strong and bold purpose:

    • That recognizes the obligation of building bridges, framing narratives that can help with cohesion and belonging among Airdrie’s Black residents and people of African descent.

    • To support growth and leadership in business, families, and community.

Going forward, ABC welcomes everyone to come onboard as we embark on this journey. We believe that the community will continue to look out for mutual beneficial relationships with all our friends and partners.

Black History and Awards Gala

The Airdrie Black Community (ABC) launched its first awards ceremony in February 2025 to celebrate and recognize the remarkable achievements and contributions of individuals and organizations from the city and the world, especially of the Black community itself. Inspired by the selfless efforts and dedication of Black community members, ABC aimed to:

    • Highlight unsung heroes: Showcase the outstanding work of Black individuals whose impact is making a positive imprint in Airdrie.

    • Preserve heritage and culture: Feature local Black stories and traditions.

    • Foster community connections: Bring together Black residents, past and present, and allies.

    • Celebrate diversity: Honor the richness of Black cultures through music, performances and festivities.

By hosting the inaugural ceremony in February, coinciding with Black History Month, the event has created a special connection to the broader celebration of Black excellence.

The “ever-green event” recognizes the commitment and dedication of individuals, organizations and businesses whose contributions uplift the Black community and Airdrie at large.

Airdrie’s recognition as an area of significant cultural diversity is reflected in the robust turnout and ongoing collaboration between the Black community and the city. The gala honored Black individuals and organizations from Airdrie and Canada, past and present.

The next gala will be held in February 2026. Get more up-to-date information on ABC’s Instagram page or dedicated information pages
